Siamese twins who have been admitted at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) for 7 months have been successfully operated on by a team of Zambian surgeons. The twins who were joined at the abdomen and shared a liver have now been separated.
Women and New Born Hospital Senior medical superintendent Dr. Maureen Chisembele has told journalists that the babies were successfully separated at 16.58 hours.
She however states that there is still a lot to be done in terms of closing up the wounds adding that there is an anticipation that the surgery will continue for an hour and a half to two hours.
It took a team of 30 doctors and nurses to carry out the surgery on Bupe and Mapalo, who were born in Kawambwa, but referred to Lusaka for the specialized operation
