Health
Minister Chitalu Chilufya has warned that Malaria should not be taken lightly
as it is not just an ordinary disease
but an impediment to development.
Speaking
when he officiated the opening of the southern Africa Malaria Elimination Eight
Initiative today, Dr. Chilufya says that
there is need to completely eliminate the disease by carrying out critical
interventions such as indoor residue spraying, and vector control.
Dr.
Chilufya states that the disease has killed a lot of women and under five
children, thereby placing a heavy burden on the country's health system.
He urges scientists to source for evidence
that will move the vector control agenda in the southern region.
Dr.
Chilufya has further stated that Zambia is going to engage community health
agents beyond southern province this
year, to participate in the malaria elimination agenda as they have been
identified as a vital force in the provision of primary health care services.
He adds
that it is important to invest in human resource for health, as well as
infrastructure for primary health care and health information management
systems and technology.
He has
since urged health workers to frown upon statistics of people who died of the
disease and ensure that it is combated.
